Prepares for Population Shift as Boomers Reach 65

(Montclair, CA – March 27, 2019) – Montclair Hospital Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare Foundation, today celebrates the grand opening of its “Center for Senior Care” inpatient program, led by Board Certified Geriatrician, Dr. Jhujhar Singh, along with a dedicated team of experts with specialized training and experience in geriatric healthcare. The Center for Senior Care is one way that Montclair Hospital Medical Center is responsive to the community’s needs as the local population shifts to include more seniors. About 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day and by 2035, seniors will outnumber children in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Patients over the age of 65 often don’t realize that their medical needs have changed,” said Dr. Singh “As we age, we become more sensitive to certain medications, our skin becomes more fragile, there are changes in the brain, we are more likely to be impacted by diabetes or hypertension, and some memory loss is normal. That’s why our team is specially trained to look at the big picture, evaluating subtle symptoms that could be clues, discussing prevention, reviewing medications, and providing individualized care plans,” he continued.

The Center for Senior Care is an inpatient program focused on preserving the quality of life for the region’s growing population of seniors. It is designed to provide specialized care tailored to meet the needs of one of the most vulnerable groups in the community. Patients over the age of 65 will be evaluated using an evidence-based tool called Identifying Seniors at Risk (ISAR) to determine if the patient would benefit from admission to the Center for Senior Care.

“We are excited to offer the community a new resource to help seniors heal faster,” said Gail Aviado, MSN, RN, Administrator, and Chief Nursing Officer. “Our seniors want to stay vibrant and active. Montclair Hospital’s Center for Senior Care is here to help keep them that way.”

Inpatient rooms in the Center for Senior Care have been newly renovated and feature special accommodations for seniors, including pressure-reducing mattresses, light dimmers, skid-resistant footwear, large, easy-to-read clocks, and backlit big-button telephones. It’s a quiet four-bed unit staffed by geriatric trained nurses and clinicians, which is anticipated to grow over time. Every detail of the Center for Senior Care has been considered from the patient’s perspective to support the delivery of care in a setting that is comforting for seniors.

Patients in the Center for Senior Care will not only be treated by a Board-Certified Geriatrician, but they will also benefit from a medication consultation with a pharmacist, dietitian oversight and education, an individualized assessment and care plan, and coordinated care upon discharge for a smooth transition home. This comprehensive team approach to care will provide seniors with the support they need to improve and maintain their health.
